Tips For Wearing A Wig

Tips For Wearing A Wig : FortuneWigs.com, 100% Human Hair Wigs, Wig Accessories and More.

This page contains important information about human hair wigs and how to care for them.

  • Putting on human hair wigs for the first time.
  • Brushing human hair wigs.
  • Washing human hair wigs.

Like your natural hair, if you want your human hair wig to continue to look beautiful, it will require regular maintenance. Your wig should be brushed as often as you wear it. Your wig should be washed at least once a month. You can do this yourself or it can be done professionally by a wig salon. We always recommend using a professional wig care specialist. Not aware of a wig salon in your area? Your local hairdresser may have experience with wigs and may be able to service your wigs just as they did your real hair. It doesn't hurt to ask. Also, don't forget that Fortune Wigs has two salon locations, one in Brooklyn, NY and one in Lakewood NJ.

Getting Started:
Adjusting and putting on our human hair wigs for the first time.

  1. If you have short hair, you may skip this step. If your hair is longer, tie your hair in a loose, low bun before putting on your wig.
  2. Remove the wig from the packaging and grip it by the front hairline.
  3. Gently run your fingers through the hair from the hairline downward to give the wig some bounce and to straighten any hairs that are out of place.
  4. One at a time, place your index and middle finger on either side of each of the smaller hair grip clips (figure 1) and, using your thumb, press upward in the center of the clip from the outside of the wig to invert the clip. You will hear a snapping sound.
  5. Once you have inverted the two smaller side clips, grip the wig as shown in figure 2 with the inside of the wig cap facing away from your body, tilt your head forward and slide the wig onto your head. The large hairline clip in the center will hook into your natural hairline
  6. While still holding onto the wig, gently toss the hair over your head and slide your fingers along the wigs perimeter to the back pulling the wig over your hair and onto your head. Don't worry if you miss some of your hair. Just slide your hands in between the wig and your head tucking in any loose hairs afterward.
  7. Now, using your finders as a guide, find the two smaller clips along the sides of the inside hairline (that you inverted earlier) and using your index and middle fingers, press the edges until the clips snap back into place.
  8. Finally, use a brush to adjust out of place hairs (or your fingers)

While putting on a wig may seem complicated at first, it is really quite simple. It does take some getting used to. You will be an expert in no time.

Is your wig too tight or to loose?
Our wigs have a built in adjustable strap (similar to a bra strap) on either side (figure 3) inside the cap. Simply move the strap's hook forward or backward to attain the most comfortable fit.

Having trouble getting it right?
If you are having trouble getting the hang of putting on your wig, we recommend that you visit a local wig salon and have them help you your first time.

How To Brush A Wig:

  1. Grip your wig by the front hairline with the back of the wig pressed against your body.
  2. Begin brushing lightly starting about six inches from the bottom and down. Make your way across the bottom of the wig, first brushing with lighter strokes, then a bit harder.
  3. Move a few inches higher on the wig and continue to brush in a downward motion, first more lightly then harder as before. Repeat this process until you reach inside hairline.
  4. Once you have completed the process of brushing your wig from the inside, you may proceed to brush the wig from the outside of the cap. Place the wig on a wig head mannequin or simply hold the wig as before but away from the body and brush gently from the part on top in a downward motion.
  5. As a final finish to give your brushed wig a more natural look, grip all of the hair about halfway down the length of your wig in a "ponytail grip" and twirl as if to curl the lock. Let the hair fall and run your fingers through it gently.

Your wig is now brushed and ready to wear. Never start brushing human hair wigs from the top. This can cause tangling and loss of hair. Make sure to brush your wigs regularly, as you would natural hair.

Disclaimer: Washing a wig incorrectly can damage it permanently. We always recommend using a professional wig stylist to wash, set, and style your wig. If you will be washing your wig yourself, please follow these instructions cautiously.

How To Wash Human Hair Wigs:
First, brush the wig. Fill a large bowl (like a salad bowl) with water (not hot). Mix in shampoo and swish the water around to mix the shampoo into the water. Hold the wig by the front end of the cap (at the hairline) and submerge the wig into the water. Remover the wig and comb it down from top to bottom. Dip the wig again and repeat. Finally, pour the remaining water from the bowl over the wig, over the sink, and comb through once more.

To condition the wig, fill the bowl again with water. Now add conditioner and mix so the conditioner is blended into the water. Dip the bottom six inches of the wig into the water, remove the wig and comb through. Repeat the process once more with plain, lukewarm water. Finally, pour the water in the bowl over the wig and comb through once more. Your wig is now washed. Squeeze the wig gently to remove excess water. Do not wring it. You may lay the wig on a towel, wrap it about the wig and press to help remove the water. Block the wig on a wig head to let it air dry. Allowing the wig to dry while hanging, can cause the cap to shrink.

Once the wig is dried, you may use a blow drier or hair iron to style as desired. Be sure to use caution when using heat appliances so as not to damage your wig.
